The Will Schmid Trio is an ever-evolving improvisational project headed by young guitarist Will Schmid. For July 30th, the trio will perform one set at 8pmfollowed by a quartet set with special guest Gerhardt Robinson at 9:15pm.
Will has led several other ensembles, appearing at the 318 Cafe, Black Dog, Jazz Central Studios, and Reverie, and was a member of Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands as well as school ensembles. He held the guitar chair in the 2014-2015 MMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble. As a duo with guitarist Adam Astrup, he wowed the audience at the Twin Cities Winter Jazz Festival in January, earning gigs at the 2016 Twin Cities and Iowa City Jazz Festivals. Will graduated from Minnetonka High School in June, and he will meld physics, mathematics and music at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH this fall. Joining Schmid will be bassist Alma Engebretson and drummer Simon Petrick. Alma is a recent graduate of Washburn High School and performed with the Dakota Combo, MYJB, and, on cello, with the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies. She plans to study classical cello and jazz bass at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music. Simon completed his junior year at Mainstreet Performing Arts High School in Hopkins, MN and has appeared in several youth bands at the Black Dog and Reverie.
Joining the trio for the second set is saxophonist Gerhardt Robinson, who has performed with the Dakota Combo, MYJB, the University of Minnesota Jazz Bands, as well as other area bands led by Jordan Anderson, Adam Astrup, and Will Schmid. A former PSEO student and recent graduate of Southwest High School, Robinson plans to continue his studies at the UofM this fall.
